I am investigating ways of expressing personal feelings of political (with a small p) malaise. I am working predominantly in black and white as a way of exploring divergence and the lack of grey areas. The Borderline works are inspired by refugee friends and their experiences of the enormous barriers small amounts of bureaucracy can cause. The works attempt to use as little material to make as large a barrier as possible. The proportions are based on crowd controls and the 3D printed hinges hint at the systems operating out of view. In the Displaced W10 work I have wrapped everything in my studio in plastic, removing any relative value and experiencing the frustration of not being able to access my means of making. The work explores identity and the alienation felt by me and others about the barriers to access to Europe for those who feel European and, more generally and severely by those who need to flee their homes.
